From the Principal
Winter Learning! The period from January through Spring Break is the time of tremendous academic growth for elementary age children. Students put together the skills they have been learning during the fall, demonstrating tremendous growth in their classwork and assessment during this period. Caregivers and parents can help during these months by ensuring that children are getting appropriate rest, lots of water (rather than sugary drinks or energy drinks), and healthy foods, especially fruits, vegetables, and proteins to balance with the breads and sugars. Students will also advance more quickly if they are practicing their reading at home every night, even on weekends.
5th Grade Wax Museum You are invited to come to our 5th grade Wax Museum on Feb. 11th from 6 - 7 pm. 5th grade students have chosen a person of historical interest, researched and wrote about their life and accomplishments. In addition, students memorized their script and will depict their character, when you 'press' the on button. This is an annual that encompasses many of the language arts expectations for 5th grade. The students do a fabulous job and love to become their character. Don't Miss It!
Activities Check the weekly bulletin and our web site for information on Robotics, Orca Singers, Ropers and Marathon club.

H1N1 - Swine flu
The Juneau School District is aware of the nationwide public health concern regarding the 2009 H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu. JSD staff is working closely with local, state and national health agencies to monitor illnesses and infections in our community. Families should remain calm, be aware and prepared. The district has an incremental plan in place to deal with potential/ actual outbreaks and our schools are prepared to follow those procedures. This protocol has four levels of response that ranges from Level 1 (Planning and Precautions) to Level 4 (Closure of All Schools and School District Activities). Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of regular influenza and can include fever, cough, sore throat, chills, headache, fatigue and body aches. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea may be present as well. The illness may last up to seven days, but people are considered to be contagious as long as symptoms persist. If you or your child is showing mild flu-like symptoms, stay home, monitor symptoms closely and be sure to speak with your physician or school nurse. The district wants to remind parents and staff members of the importance of prevention and how to stay healthy.
