Important Public Health Message For Parents Regarding Pertussis Several Juneau School District students have contracted Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Pertussis is a contagious bacterial infection characterized by a cough. State of Alaska Public Health officials have informed us that if your child has been vaccinated for Pertussis within the last eight years and is up-to-date on their vaccination regimen, the vaccine provides a high level of protection from the disease. If you or others in your home have not been immunized or your immunizations are not up-to-date, please see your health care provider about receiving an immunization. Pertussis vaccines are available for children up to age 7, and persons 11 to 64 years of age. Public Health officials have asked us to pass on the following precautions to avoid any potential further spread of the infection in our community:

.... Continued If your child has a cough, see your health care provider immediately. You should inform them that your child might have been exposed to Pertussis. If advised to do so by your health care provider to treat symptoms, you must follow the complete treatment which includes the following: 1. A booster of the Pertussis vaccine, if appropriate. It is extremely important to follow these Public Health directions in order to prevent any further spread of this infection. Please feel free to contact the nurse at your child’s school if you have any further questions.
