Welcome to Harborview Elementary School - 2009-2010!

Harborview Newsletter
March 17, 2010

Dear Parents,

I just want to express my “Thanks” to all of you who participated in our Parent/Teacher Conferences. The conference is an important part of parent involvement, and my hope is that it was meaningful for all involved.

I recently came back from the 27th Annual Effective Schools Conference in Scottsdale, AZ. It was packed full of great keynote speakers, insightful breakout sessions, and excellent ideas that will help us as we continue to forge ahead supporting 21st century learning. There were so many good sessions that I attended. We know that in the coming years there will be some key issues facing educators; diverse student populations, emerging technologies, and the mandate that all students learn are just a few central themes.

As your principal, please be assured that I will do everything in my power to help our students achieve to their highest potential. Harborview School will continue to be a lighthouse for all diverse populations of students. I am committed to making our elementary school the very best school in our district.

Have a great spring break and remainder of this month!

Sincerely,

Dave Stoltenburg, Principal

TumbleBook Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

(Requires the Flash plug-in to view and hear the animation.)

Study Island Arrives

Harborview has purchased a building license for a great resource called Study Island. Study Island is a web-based program that helps prepare students for Standards Based Testing and Measures of Academic Progress Testing.

Study Island is accessible from school, home, library any location that has an Internet connection. This is a great tool to use with your child throughout the year to review reading, writing and math lessons and play fun games including during summer months!

We are excited about the benefits that Study Island can bring to our students and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity by using Study Island.

Your classroom teacher will send home your student(s) login at conferences. You can request login information from your student’s classroom teacher(s) or email us at HBVStudyIsland@jsd.k12.ak.us.

  1. Login to Study Island (login information below)
  2. Click on the section tab (math, reading, etc.)
  3. Click <pretest> for first visit, and <start studying>
  4. Once a pretest is complete you may work through the topics in any order. You must pass all topics with 70% to receive a blue ribbon.  You may rework missed questions and redo topics.
  5. After you have completed a topic you can go back to the topic and select game mode (top of screen says “test mode”
  6. When all topics have been completed you then take the “Post Test”
