Conferences/Thanksgiving Break:

Well, here we are on the brink of Teacher/Parent Conferences and Thanksgiving Break, both of which are important times of year.   Scheduled conferences will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24-25, no school that day for students.    These conferences give you and teachers an opportunity to discuss strengths of your child and also to discuss areas of growth, concerns, etc.  I encourage all of you to make good use of that time and to share openly.  We want every single child to reach his/her highest potential.

MAP:

MAP stands for Measures of Academic Success.  Juneau Schools has embarked on a new way for assessing students.  It is through MAP.  What makes MAP so unique is that each student is accesses on a computer, each computer test generates a test for the level that your child is at (this is a technological breakthrough in the way testing can occur), and scores are immediate.  Your child will be tested 3 times/year and teachers will use the results to help drive instruction in a differentiated approach.  Look for more information coming.

Violent Video Games

Research confirms that violent games can increase children’s aggression.  Visit this web link for more information: http://www.psychologymatters.org/videogames.html

Sincerely,

Dave Stoltenburg, Principal

Harborview Elementary is currently helping students learn using Study Island. The Study Island Standards Based Assessment (SBA) Preparation Program is specifically designed to help students master the content specified in the Alaska Performance Standards/Grade Level Expectations. Study Island’s focus on the Alaska Performance Standards/ Grade Level Expectations enables students to improve their performance in all skill areas tested on the SBA in grades 3 through 8. Study Island also offers Math and Reading Skills for Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, You can use Study Island at home because it is a web based program. We hope that you encourage your child to learn at Study Island by going to www.studyisland.com. A login card will be sent home with your child's login soon.
