Welcome to Harborview Elementary School - 2009-2010!

HARBORVIEW NEWS!  HARBORVIEW NEWS!  HARBORVIEW NEWS!

January 21, 2010

Dear Parents,

Testing: We have a busy few weeks with testing Harborview and Montessori students with M.A.P. (Measures of Academic Progress) test. This test is given three times during the school year and gives teachers important data regarding reading, language arts and math. Over time we can see growth in students. An important aspect of this test is that it will help drive instruction for teachers. By knowing specifically what students need at a particular time, teachers can adjust their teaching to meet the instructional needs of their students. M.A.P. is unique in that it provides immediate feedback because the test is taken on the computer and each test adjusts to the level that each student is at…a very nice feature.

In addition all 5th graders will be taking the Terra Nova Test beginning February 2-4. The Terra Nova is a mandated state norm referenced test. This (5th grade only) test looks at Reading, Language Arts, and Math.

Please be sure that your child is getting adequate sleep (9+ hours is recommended for elementary age students) and a good breakfast for a great start to their school day!

Hoppers: Hoppers begin January 28-April 15 and meet from 2:30-3:30 on Thursdays. (No Hoppers on March 11 or 25th).

Spelling Bee: February 1 at 8:30 in the gym.

No School: February 15, staff in-service.

H1N1 Clinic: February 19, 8:15-Noon at Harborview Elementary School.

A & P Receipts: The Harborview PTA is collecting A and P receipts. A collection box is located just outside the front office. Please only donate your receipts for 2010. Harborview receives a portion of the receipts that will go toward funding school-related events. Thank you for your participation!

PTA: The Harborview PTA is busy working to make Harborview the best it can be. We’re planning a spring talent show and another fundraiser dinner besides a host of other activities that support the Harborview Elementary School. If you are interested in volunteering during our school lunch time, please call the school and ask for Dave Stoltenburg or Darlene Jacobsen. Or, if you would like to join your son or daughter at lunch, we encourage you to do that. PTA’s next meeting is February 4th from 5-6 p.m. in the Harborview Library.

Drop Off Zone: At the front entrance of Harborview, we want to make every effort to safely drop off children. Our Site Council has and will continue to discuss ways to improve the “drop off” zone. Please use this area to only “drop & go”. If you need to walk your child into the school, you can use the Blockbuster parking lot until 10:00a.m. or find a place on the side street (W. 12th or F Street) in front of the Juneau Senior Center.

Office Administrative Position has been filled: Please welcome Jemmalyn (Jem) Geceta, Harborview’s new Administrative Assistant. Jem has a strong school based background (special education and counseling) and is new to Juneau. Welcome aboard, Jem!

Have a great remainder of your week and month!

Sincerely,

Dave Stoltenburg

Harborview Principal

TumbleBook Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

(Requires the Flash plug-in to view and hear the animation.)

Study Island Arrives

Harborview has purchased a building license for a great resource called Study Island. Study Island is a web-based program that helps prepare students for Standards Based Testing and Measures of Academic Progress Testing.

Study Island is accessible from school, home, library any location that has an Internet connection. This is a great tool to use with your child throughout the year to review reading, writing and math lessons and play fun games including during summer months!

We are excited about the benefits that Study Island can bring to our students and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity by using Study Island.

Your classroom teacher will send home your student(s) login at conferences. You can request login information from your student’s classroom teacher(s) or email us at HBVStudyIsland@jsd.k12.ak.us.

  1. Login to Study Island (login information below)
  2. Click on the section tab (math, reading, etc.)
  3. Click <pretest> for first visit, and <start studying>
  4. Once a pretest is complete you may work through the topics in any order. You must pass all topics with 70% to receive a blue ribbon.  You may rework missed questions and redo topics.
