Pre-School Program - Harborview has an integrated preschool program with a morning and an afternoon session. The preschool operates 4 days a week, Monday - Thursday, and has one Special Education teacher and two or three Instructional Assistants. Transportation is available to the preschool for students only with special needs. |

| BASE Program -Juneau Youth Services' BASE program has been providing services to the Juneau School District for more than 15 years, encompassing all levels of education in the district, including a classroom set up at Harborview Elementary. BASE's goal is to maintain students in mainstream classes, while providing structure and assistance throughout the day. The program staff work with the kids, helping them develop the emotional skills they will need to succeed in school and in their lives outside of the classroom. Summer programming, holidays, and academic assistance are important components of this project. Counseling services to youth and their families through mediation services are also offered. RALLY Program - (Recreation, Arts, Learning, and Leadership for Youth) is an optional elementary school age child care program offered by the Juneau School District. The goal of RALLY is to provide an enriching recreational program in which children are encouraged to pursue their individual interests and develop friendships, independence, confidence, and respect for themselves and others. RALLY activities shall be designed to model and to teach positive social skills, effective communications and problem solving strategies. Local RALLY programs will function as an integral part of each elementary school program. |
| Conflict Resolution - Harborview incorporate lessons on listening and communication, understanding feelings, problem-solving, anger management, and understanding other points of view into the ongoing classroom work, so that all students have opportunities to increase their skills in productively handling disagreements. Each child's social, emotional, and physical wellness is of utmost importance to us at Harborview. We strive to work with families to ensure that our school is a safe, productive, and happy environment for all children. | ![]() |
SCOTs Program - The SCOTs Program is a team problem solving meeting available to parents and teachers to help address a specific student concern. The team meets to identify a primary concern and focus on interventions to help address the concern. This year there are 3 different teams, each consisting of a specialist, one primary and one intermediate teacher. |
| Counseling - Students participate in counseling lessons weekly. Lessons focus on feelings, friendships, getting along, and making healthy choices. Some small group and individual counseling time is available to students. The counseling lending library is full of books and games for parents and students to use together or indiviudally. The Harborview School Store is open every weekday between 12:15 and 12:45 PM. Your child can purchase common school supplies (erasers, pencils, sharpeners, etc.) and a few specialty items. The proceeds from sales benefit student projects and activities. |
| Discovery Foundation - The Discovery Foundation Nature Studies program is a hands-on field oriented program developed in tandem with the District's science curriculum. The nature studies activities they provide complement the other science instruction offered in the school. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participate in this program, which is partially funded by the PTA. Sea Week Program - Sea Week occurs in the spring and is a concentrated look at the ocean environment. It features science activity field trips to local bays, fields, wetlands, and labs. Local marine experts conduct lessons and activities at the sites. All students participate in a beach trip during this week and parents are invited to participate as chaperones. |
| Mentoring Matters - Mentoring Matters is a collaborative effort between Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Harborview Elementary School. It is a designed to pair one child with an adult volunteer who will assist in helping children enhance their reading skills. Mentors will meet with children at various supervised locations around the school, such as the library, conference room, classrooms, hallways to sit and read together. Mentors will be trained in reading with children, interactive writing, vocabulary development, and book discussions. Mentors will share the progress of their reading partners with teachers. | ![]() |
Special Services -Special Services programs are provided to students who experience some kind of exceptionality and are in need of a support system to realize their long term potential. These programs include audiology services, school health services, psychological services and counseling, speech and language services, physical occupational services, and gifted/talented services. |
| Music Program - All grades K-5 attend music class once a week for 30-45 minutes. Band and choir programs are also offered. Harborview Singers is open to any 3rd -5th grader. This choir meets twice weekly during lunch recess. Band is open to any interested 5th grader. It meets twice weekly before school at 8:00 a.m. The Harborview music department presents a Winter and a Spring concert each year. | ![]() |
Technology refers to the inventions used by people to make their lives easier, even when the use of those inventions only seems to make our lives more complicated! In a school setting, technology plays an important part of our lives in the form of computers, digital cameras and more! |
| Officer in the Schools Program - A police officer makes regular visits to Harborview to talk to the students about D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) bicycle safety, the buckle up program, 911 safety, and to provide a positive role model for students. | ![]() |
Tlingit Language Literacy Program - This program is open to all students from kindergarten to 5th grade; both native and non-native kids can enroll. This program is for kids to get an education while also learning about Tlingit culture and language. The Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy Classrooms are in the Harborveiw Elementary School. |
| Physical Education Program - The Harborview PE program is based upon the SPARK program associated with San Diego State University. SPARK emphasizes lots of movement, noncompetitive sports, and healthy nutrition. The program uses music as frequently as possible. It encourages 60 minutes of active exercise a day and discourages television viewing. If children watch televison, it should not exceed one hour a day. Activity and good nutrition are keys to healthy children and adults.
