Mendenhall River Community School Launching Literacy

Please note, next school year we will join the other elementary schools and begin an early release on approximately TWO MONDAYS each month.  Friday will no longer be an early day for MRCS students during the 2010-2011 school year.

Launching Literacy is a program designed to more efficiently provide staff development to teachers and paraeducators at Mendenhall River Community School, which in turn improves student achievement. Our year long plan is posted below, as well as other information as it becomes available.  Please take a moment to read about how this is helping the students at MRCS!  It is making a positive difference...  (Capital City Weekly Article, 9/07) (Capital City Weekly Article, 4/09)

Students spend longer in school by coming early Monday through Friday.  This allows for an early dismissal on Friday afternoon.  Due to the additional time in school, weekly student contact time is virtually the same as a traditional school schedule.  If you are having difficulty finding options for child care on Friday afternoon, please call Patty Newman, MRCS Principal.  She would be more than happy to assist you and problem solve available options.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT 20 MINUTES OF YOUR DAY?

THE 20 MINUTES YOU READ WITH YOUR CHILD.

READ WITH YOUR CHILD EVERYDAY!

PHONEMIC AWARENESS

Phonemic Awareness:  The ability to HEAR and MANIPULATE sounds in words.  Phonemic awareness is NOT phonics.  It is through listening, and does not involve words in print.

Examples of Phonemic Awareness Skills:

Blending:  What word am I trying to say? /m/ /o/ /p/?  (mop)

Segmenting:  Tell me the sounds in MOP?  /m/ /o/ /p/

“One of the most compelling and well-established findings in the research on beginning reading is the relationship between phonemic awareness and reading acquisition.”  (Kame’enui, et.al, 1997)

How is MRCS doing with phonemic awareness?

KINDER:  In '05-06, 56% of our students were meeting the target; Currently 90% of our students are at or above the target!

FIRST:  In '05-06, 26% of our students were meeting the target; Currently 98% of our students are at or above the target!

Way to go MRCS!!
