Welcome to Thunder Mountain High School

From the Principal

Time flies! Here we are approaching Spring – and the weather we’ve been having certainly emphasizes that!

Along with Spring comes a flurry of activities! Our current high school students have indicated academy and elective preferences for next year; students and parents have submitted forms if they want to change high schools for the next school year; informational meetings for 8th grade parents have been scheduled, and the 8th grade student visitations to both high schools are scheduled for the first week of March. To top it off, both prom and graduation plans are underway.

We’re very proud of the accomplishments of some of our students who have participated in State events during the past few weeks.
  • A team made up of students from both JDHS and TMHS took first place for the fourth year in a row at the State Oceanic Science Bowl (Tsumani Bowl) competition. Seth Brickey-Smith from TMHS was named the most valuable player on the team. They were awarded a trip to the National competition in April.
  • Two TMHS teams traveled to Fairbanks to compete in the State Robotics competition. They didn’t win any trophies but to quote Carol May, their advisor, “We learned a lot and are already planning ahead for next year!”
  • Sami Martinez, who was the first place winner in the Juneau “Poetry Out Loud” contest, was one of the three finalists in the recent State “Poetry Out Loud” competition.
Our coaches are beginning to set up meetings and practices with students to start preparing for a season of spring sports: track and field, baseball, softball, and both boys and girls soccer are gearing up for the new season.

And, of course, Spring Break is not far way! Yes, spring is coming and along with it a whole new set of experiences we are looking forward to that are awaiting our students and our school community.
