Course Descriptions:

Japanese I (L211)— Year Long 1.0 Credit

Japanese I introduces the basic syntax and all conjugations which form a basis for easy Japanese conversation. Through basic drills, students learn the difference between conversational and written Japanese. Romanized Japanese, which uses the English language alphabet is taught, but "Hiragana" one of the Japanese alphabets, is the basis for reading and writing. Students may participate in the Southeast World Languages Festival. Students should anticipate daily homework and weekly quizzes.

Japanese II (L221)— Year Long 1.0 Credit

Prerequisites: Japanese I, C or above

Japanese II students develop the skill of reading and writing the Japanese language. Basic Japanese syntax and conjugations are reviewed in "Hiragana." The shapes, sound, meaning, and historical background of the Chinese characters called "Kanji" will be explored, and students will learn to read and write a limited number. Students are expected to form sentences using this writing system. A third alphabet, "Katakana," used for foreign words, is also used. Students may participate in the Southeast World Languages Festival. Students should anticipate daily assignments and weekly quizzes.

Japanese III (L231)— Year Long 1.0 Credit

Prerequisites: Japanese II, C or above

Japanese III is a comprehensive course building on and reinforcing previously learned materials. Students speak, read, and write more complex structures, including an additional 50-100 "Kanji" characters. Short Japanese essays will be read. Emphasis is on mastery of informal verbs to enhance conversational skills. Participation in the Southeast World Languages Festival is expected. Thirty minutes of daily homework can be anticipated.

Japanese IV (L241) — Year Long 1.0 Credit

Prerequisites: Japanese III with a C or above

Japanese IV is an advanced course expanding and utilizing previously acquired skills in the lower level Japanese courses. Particular emphasis is placed on reading and writing "Kanji." Participation in out of class language related activities is expected.
