Assignment:

Did you ever wonder what the legal ramifications were of certain digital activities? You are going to pick one and then research it. You will tell the class what it is and what are the legal consequences if you choose this behavior by summarizing two articles of people who were actually charged doing this activity. You will need to research and figure out two ways to defend why you wouldn't do this activity to a friend who is encouraging you to do it. All referenced research will need to be cited appropriately.

Topics include: cyberbullying, digital theft (music, pictures, movies), online predation, sexting, defamation of character, stealing someone's wireless internet, hacking into someone's account, impersonating someone else (either on their Facebook account or taking a test on their behalf), plagerizing someone else's work, forwarding an inappropriate picture of someone else and doing personal work during business hours.

BIG6 Steps to Follow

STEP 1. Task Definition. State the problem or question. Define the problem.

-- Pick your topic and use "good key words". Good key words are the important words and phrases that specificially describe your topic. They are NOT long sentences.

-- How to come up with good key words: come up with a topic, pick synonyms, categories that might lead you to information (larger categories) or words or phrases that might be more specific (smaller categories).

STEP 2. Information Seeking Strategy.

Step 2A. Determine the range of possible sources - which one of these sources should YOU choose?

-- Destiny

Don't forget the card catalog is organized differently than Google. You need to search by author, subject or title.

-- Digital Pipeline! You will need a password if you log in from home. Ask me for the password and I will give it to you.

-- Kids Click. A web search site designed for kids by librarians.

-- Librarians' Internet Index - the first public library of and for the Internet community.

Step 2B . Evaluate sites for validity, relevancy, currency, and accuracy of information.

STEP 3. Location and Access.

Locate sources and find information within the sources.

Search tips.

If you use a search engine, do not forget to use boolean logic (AND, OR, -) and quotations marks (" ") to refine your search. Or try link: URL to find sites that are linked to your site of interest.

STEP 4 . Use of information. Engage (read, hear, view, touch) the information in a source. Extract relevant information from a source and make sure to cite it.

Step4A: Use of information.

-- Is the information in-depth enough for me? Is it too superficial (simple)?

-- Does the information give you answers to your questions?

-- Does the information give you new ideas, or lead you to other sources?

-- Is the information given in the type of format you need (maps, dates, graphics, etcs).

--Are you going to quote? Paraphrase? Summarize? Quotation: must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. Paraphrase: putting a passage from source material into your own words. Should be shorter than the original passage. Summarize: put the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). For all three you MUST ATTRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE - YOU MUST CITE.

-- How will I get the information about of the source? Notetaking? Photocopying? Printing? Interviewing?

-- Pick a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughts. Cluster versions 1, 2 and 3, and Venn Diagrams are good ones to start with. You will add and change these graphic organizers as you continue your research.

Part A: GETTING STARTED: Please watch the below tutorials. After you have watched the first video, make and save an example that shows that you have mastered the skill shown in the video. Now watch the next video, make and save an example that shows you have mastered the bouncing ball skill. Continue watching the videos and making and saving examples. When done, show all six examples to me and I will check them off in my gradebook. It is important that you really master these basic skills before you move on.

iMovie

ASSIGNMENT: Figure out what type of movie your group is going to make. Decide as a group if you are going to enter your movie in a CONTEST and thus agree to follow their requirements. Each type of movie has a slightly different set of directions. Make sure you choose one of the ones listed below. Please do not come up with a new category.

Every group will be required to take a video basics quiz to ensure that everyone is familiar with camera/tripod/personal safety, basic tips to follow when shooting video, basic camera shots, lighting tips and classroom checkout producedures.

Before you start filming, make sure you've completed your storyboard and that you've looked at your iMovie assessment. After your done filming you will digitally edit your movie on the computer and then electronically turn in a digital copy of your final project.

Estimated time to complete assignment: 16 days: 3 days to brainstorm and refine your storyline. 7-8 days to film 4-5 days to edit your project.

When you are done with your project you will electronically drop it off. Then we will watch all the movies and your group will receive PEER FEEDBACK. Your peers will comment on the storyline, camera angles, transitions, sounds effects, etc. Your group will then read the feedback, have 2 more days to do some final editing and then submit your final project.

Step 1: Look at examples of completed iMovies and talk to your partners about what seems interesting.

Step 2: After your group has picked an iMovie topic, click on this link and follow the directions.

#1 ONLY import your movie to a computer that has the words "CD-R" or "DVD-R" written on the outside of it in black permanent marker.

#2 When loading your movie, if you start to run low on MEMORY on your computer, tell your teacher IMMEDIATELY otherwise you may LOSE your project. How do you know if you are running low? The numbers in the bottom right hand corner of the iMovie screen will start to turn yellow, then red. As soon as you see the numbers turn yellow, please ask for help.

Safety Guidelines - whether you are using an online social networking site or just surfing the web, keep these guidelines in mind:

-- NEVER have a relationship with someone that is a secret from your parents. Think about it. Why are you keeping it a secret??
-- Avoid open chat rooms if at all possible.

--Be very very careful about what information you give out on the web. NEVER give out your last name, phone number, the name of your school, names of your family or friends or post your picture. Try to pick a gender neutral screen name that does not reveal information about yourself.

-- Want to get a job someday? Even if you don’t get stalked by a pedophile, remember that more and more employers and colleges are looking on the internet to learn about YOU. Again, OLD information can linger on the web for ages. It is best to NEVER post information that could embarrass or endanger you sometime in the future!

--Tell your parents right away if you come across any information that makes you feel uncomfortable.

-- Never meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.

-- Remember that people online may not be who they say they are.

-- Make sure to go over this internet safety plan with your parents.

Cyberbullying

According to the STOP BULLYING website, you need to STOP! BLOCK! and TELL! if you are targeted by a cyberbully.

STOP! Don't do anything. Take 5! to calm down.

BLOCK! Block the cyberbully or limit all communications to those on your buddy list.

TELL! Tell a trusted adult, you don't have to face this alone.

Online Predators

-- Remember that Pedophiles work hard at stalking their targets and will patiently work to develop relationships with them. It is not uncommon for them to be developing a long list of potential victims at any one time.

-- Remember, the information you post is no longer private. Even if you delete it later, that information is still out there - either on someone else’s website or under a site’s HISTORY page.You are dealing with a WORLDWIDE audience.

-- Keep in mind that predators will search for their potential victims by zipcode or they will search for their potential victims by race or religion. They might even target groups of people that they hate.

-- Pedophiles will build TRUST and then often mail a gift like a cell phone.They will ask you to keep their relationship a SECRET from your parent or guardian or even from your friends.

-- When in a chat room, people are WATCHING, looking for revealing information. Pedophiles will watch quietly for months without saying a thing and just gather information from a chat room. They will then introduce themselves as Joey’s friend and amazingly, they like to hang out at Bullwinkles just like you do!

-- Can this happen in Juneau? YES! According to JPD, 4 people in Juneau had their computers taken last year in Juneau in pedophile related cases. According to the National Alert Register the 99801 zip code has - 228 sex offenders.

Copyright - protects creative expression that has been reduced to a tangible form like a book, recorded music, computer program, painting, photograph or movie.

ASSIGNMENT: Using no more than 3600 mm of balsa wood, you are going to construct and then break a bridge. Two awards are given out for this project - one for the bridge that holds the most weight and one for the bridge that has the highest efficiency. You will learn about tension, compression, loads, joints and how different shapes have different structural strengths. Remember, by building something small you can learn a lot about the big structure.
