Differentiation at Riverbend
What Is Differentiation?
Differentiation, or differentiated instruction, is an approach to instruction in which the content, instruction, and/or product are modified to better fit the differing interests, learning styles, and/or readiness levels of individual students. One model for differentiation is Backwards Design (also called Understanding by Design or UbD).

Staff The following personnel and groups are poised and ready (or are in the process of getting ready) to help classroom teachers differentiate:
Extended Learning Teacher Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, each JSD elementary school's Extended Learning teacher added the duties of Differentiation Specialist to her job description.
Instructional Support Team In addition, each elementary school has a cadre of five teachers who have had common training by the fine trainers from University of Santa Cruz New Teacher Center. The ESL and EL teachers, Literacy Leader, one special education and classroom teacher were trained in mentoring and analysis of student work, as well as RTI (Response to Intervention). In further training sessions, Riverbend's IST had the opportunity to figure out how their work would fit in best with the current structures in our building (Professional Learning Communities and SCOTS). Riverbend's NTC trained group consists of : Sheryl Wittig (EL), Jan Faure (ESL), Karen Doxey (LL), Doug Badilla (Sp.Ed.), and Brenda Weaver.
Enrichment
Team
The Enrichment Team group consists of the Traci Day (music teacher), Scott May (physical education teacher), Carolyn Kelley (librarian), Todd Wicks (behavior specialist), Mark Insteness (computer tech) and sometimes Lynnette Dihle (school counselor) . In addition to providing enrichment activities for students while their classroom teachers are working in Professional Learning Communites and/or with the Instructional Support Team, these professionals have a wealth of information useful for teachers wishing ensure that the curriculum they offer includes all multiple intelligences.
JSD Curricular Connections Listed below will be links to lessons, units, and other resources differentiated to meet the specific goals and objectives of the Juneau School District curricula. This is a huge work in progress that we are just starting. If there is anything that you would like addressed sooner than later, PLEASE let me (Sheryl Wittig) know, and we will work on that component sooner than others.
