E-mail
Please feel free to e-mail me anytime. My e-mail address is wittigs@jsd.k12.ak.us. I'm usually pretty quick with e-mail replies. I have gathered up family e-mail addresses for each of the students participating in EL this year, and will be sending out a quick e-mail newsletter/homework reminder occasionally. Please let me know if your e-mail address has changed or you need to be added to this list. |
| Telephone | I am also available via telephone. I don't catch all the phone calls that come through, but feel free to leave a message, but it may be a day or so before I can get back to you. My work phone number is (907) 463-1819, ext. 230. |
In Person
I am available to meet with parents of Extended Learning students by appointment. I am usually available after school for informal meetings; feel free to stop by any afternoon after school, 3:45-4:15. |
Homework!
| Calendar | I used to publish a detailed calendar of assignment due dates, quiz and competition dates, etc. I don't have a current calendar, so feel free to e-mail me anytime if you have any questions. I also keep CML assignment due dates posted on the white board in my classroom. |
Homework Load
Please let me know if your child seems to be spending too much or too little time doing homework. We have the flexibility to customize the homework load for each student, if needed. |
CML
Grades Two, Three, Four and Five: Students are assigned six CML (Continental Math League) problems per week. Please let me know if your child is spending much more than one hour per week on CML. You should have an annotated answer key for you to use at your discretion. If you need an additional copy, just let me know. Students have access to all the CML assignments for the year, and may take home as many assignments ahead as they can keep track of. The assignments packets consist of six problems, one problem per page (three pages, double sided). Please let me know if you need any CML materials. |
BOB
EL students with a strength in reading are encouraged, but not required to participate in Battle of the Books. Beginning in October, most EL students need to be reading about ONE BOOK PER WEEK to finish before the Riverbend Battle of the Books in mid to late January. Please encourage your child to make this choice a priority. There is no written work assigned in addition to reading the fifteen books. |
JGB
Students are expected to come to class each week with the assigned story completely read. Each student has a JGB anthology assigned to him/her and should bring it to each Shared Inquiry Discussion Group. |
Important Dates
| The Juneau School District will NOT be presenting a Project Fair this spring (2008). Mrs. Wittig will have student projects presented at other appropriate venues, and online at a Virtual Project Fair, linked from this website.
Participants of the Continental Math League will be honored at a ceremony in the spring at UAS. Stay tuned for further details. |

Lending Library
| I have a collection of books on parenting gifted children that are available for loan. | |
Fundraising
| Riverbend has the opportunity to participate in the Alaska Robotics League / FIRST Lego League, but the equipment is expensive. It costs about $150 to purchase the competition challenge each year, and another $200 to enter the Juneau Robotics Jamboree. We would love any type of parental help in fundraising for this worthy program. | |
