Southeast Island School District
My first teaching position was with SISD. I was the middle school teacher in Coffman Cove, Alaska.
The following year I was transferred to Hobart Bay, where I taught third, fourth and fifth grade. The logging camp closed at the end of the school year, so I was transferred to Thorne Bay. I taught middle school, high school social studies, and fifth and sixth grades over the next four years at Thorne Bay School.

My final two years at SISD, I was the itinerant kindergarten teacher for the entire school district. Loaded with a week's food, my sleeping bag, and teaching materials in my backpack, I would fly out to one of a dozen communities in southern Southeast Alaska. After spending 24 hours in the community, sleeping in the school or local teacher's homes, the school plane would pick me up and move me on to the next town. Friday afternoon, I would be delivered back to my base in Ketchikan.
Ketchikan was a great place to live. The beauty and charm of the community, the Monthly Grind and friendly people leave me with fond memories.
In the eight years I worked at SISD, the district shrunk from 22 schools to 12!
