Four Years in the Arctic
Fresh out of college, I was recruited to work on the North Slope in the oilfields. I spent three years at Arco's Kuparuk Construction Camp, then a year at Arco's Main Construction Camp in Prudhoe Bay.
Here is the Kuparuk facility. My job involved running the camp commissary and doing clerical work for the catering company.
I would work twelve hours a day, seven days a week for three weeks, then I would have three weeks off. The ARCO charter would fly us back to Anchorage, where I would travel to Hawaii, Europe or throughout the United States.
It wasn't all work on the Slope. In my spare time I would quilt, play guitar with friends, run, and even go for an annual dip into the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic is very cold, but very shallow, so you need to run very far out before you can dive in. Here I am near Oliktok Point at midnight.
